The first project the BHC focused on was saving the last remaining depot on the Bayfield Peninsula. This is the Houghton Depot.
From 2018 through 2019, many volunteers worked at getting it ready to be moved from private property to its final location on Feb 24, 2020 at 81120 Bayview Park Road and placed on a permanent foundation.
Once on its foundation, the depot was fully restored. Outside, easily accessible storyboards were added that tell the story of the railroad, brownstone quarrying and local history. Artifacts with explanations take us to their time. Adjacent to the depot is a fully restored brownstone quarry paymaster’s office.
Both are located 6 miles north of Washburn off Highway 13 at Bayview Park.
The process of deconstruction and moving are shown in the photos.
This railroad model built by Paul Johnson, shows the depot (small building on the right) as it existed in 1913.
